As all of you animal lovers already know, it costs a lot of money to take care of a pet, more than you originally imagined it would! So I thought I would write this post in order to give potential pet owners an idea of just how much you can expect to spend on them.
So let me say firstly that for those of who you don't know, I have two cats, Lily and Lola. Here they are hiding from the vacuum cleaner!!!
Both are indoor felines. They have both been spayed and micro chipped (£100 per cat). We decided to get this done incase either cat somehow got out and became lost.
They both eat Whiskas Simply Cat Food at £4.29 a box (12 pouches which lasts 3 days). We buy 4 boxes of this each week as sometime Lily refuses to eat and we have to take the food up. We also have to mix her food with canned tuna (89p per can) every so often because the waste can become ridiculous! This ensures that she eats her pouch of food.
Lola is more of a dry food cat, and loves her Whiskas biscuits (£2.55 per box). These last about 3 weeks.
We put their food in separate bowls so that each cat has their own territory. They each have a food mat which stops food from making a mess on my kitchen floor and they share a water dish. All this cost under £10.00.
They have a pink litter tray that we bought from Pets at home for £6.00 in the sale, and we fill this with Catsan litter (£5.48 a bag). This may seem extreme for litter, however it is such good quality that it means we only have to change it once a week. Their litter tray is also lined with clear bin liners that we buy from our local supermarket for around £2.00 for 20 bags. We do this because the litter tray will stay in a good condition for longer.
Nappy bags are also a must have for poop-a-scooping! These cost around 80p for 300 and last ages!
Now because they are indoor cats, we buy them lots of toys to keep them occupied. They also have a scratching post that they can climb up on to and play on. This cost £45.00 and keeps them very happy.
Treats also keep them happy, although we don't let them have too many as it makes them sick! We get them Whiskas dentabits (£1.00) and give them a couple each every now and again.
Phew...I think that's about it for the things we buy for them...but what about other things that we have to pay for, such as replacement carpets because Lola likes to scratch holes in them! We've also had to buy vases, candles , ornaments etc again because they've been knocked off by our pesky pussycats! It's a good job we love them so much!
So as you can see, pets cost a lot of money! But they are so worth it!!!!
